Tractor with Trailer Dump 1963-64
|
It's unclear why this toy, #953 (#1953 in 1964) lasted only two years in the Hubley inventory. It is
certainly a handsome and functional toy that would have seemed to be a good seller.
The excellently detailed elevating dump bed was probably incapable of lifting a load of heavy wet sand
- even with the aid of the coil spring mounted below. This weakness may have been its downfall.
Even the undercarriage is a well-detailed casting
as was most of the Mighty Metal line.
The tailgate was unique to this truck and was not
the same as the Pick-Up or the Dump Truck.
Flatbed Hauler and Power Shovel - 1963-64

Another "two-year wonder," the #966 (#1966 in 1964) didn't have the longevity the remaining four
Mighty Metal trucks enjoyed. This set included a #901 Power Shovel which was introduced in 1962.
The green Hubley oval was used on 1963 and 1964 trucks. The red triangle was nicely integrated into
the hubcap design. Mighty Metal hubcaps are often scarred up - they protruded too far from the sides
of the truck. Door decals changed several times during the production run of this series.
The flatbed trailer was unique to this toy. Hubley
made other flat bed trailers but they were not
interchangeable with the #966.
Trailer wheels were unmarked generic Hubley.
They were probably used on a number of other
Hubley products.
